Make Extra Money Online by Writing Blogs 0

Posted on June 16, 2010 by Blog Design Journal

If you’re like most people, you could use a few extra dollars each month to help with the bills or to buy the extra things your family needs. Many people, just like you, are turning to the Internet as a way to make that extra money and starting up a blogging website is a great way to begin. A blog is basically a website with entries that are written in journal form and you have the freedom of writing about any topic.

The blog entries that you post are listed in reverse chronological order so the newest blog will be what the viewer sees first. You can post everyday or every other day. You can go longer in between posting but if you’re serious about making money you need to keep it updated. Creating a blog is the easiest way to start up a website and a great way to make extra money. Most importantly, it’s something that you can do even if you don’t know a lot about the Internet.

Google Adsense

One of the best ways to make money with your blog is through advertisements. Google Adsense is an excellent way to get started. Google Adsense is easy and free to use and it works by allowing you to display targeted Google ads on your website. The ads are placed on your website automatically and the only thing you have to worry about is placing a small code inside your web pages. However, it’s important to know the placement of the ad and the way the content is organized will have an impact on the amount of money you can make with advertisements on your blogs.

The Three Main Types of Ads Available

As a blogger, you have several advertising options to choose from. The three main types of ads used by bloggers to make money include Pay-per-click, Pay-per-impression and Pay-per-action. If you choose the pay-per-click ads the advertiser will pay you each time a visitor clicks on their ads. Pay-per-impression pays each time the ad appears on the blog’s page and pay-per-action will pay when a visitor clicks on the ad and then performs an action such as making a purchase.

How to Increase Traffic to Your Blog

The more visitors you have the more money you can make from advertisements. The best way to increase traffic to your site is by keeping the readers interested. It’s important to keep your content updated, fresh and appealing. People visit your blog for the content and if it’s dull and boring, you won’t generate the traffic you need to make money.

The best way to keep the content fresh is by choosing a subject that you truly have an interest in and one that you know something about. When you have a real passion for the topic being discussed, it will make it easier to keep it updated. Target a specific audience, be consistent with your information and stay focused. Everything you write on your blog needs to be accurate providing your readers with useful information.

Presentation is also important. The blog needs to be presented in an easy to read format, look professional and be written in a conversational tone. Making a good first impression is essential because it may be the only one you get. Before long, you’ll be able to join the many bloggers who have already discovered how to make extra money online by writing blogs.

Make WordPress Obey: List Posts on Static Pages 0

Posted on October 14, 2009 by Blog Design Journal

WordPress is a great tool with ton of community support.  But sometimes, when you just can’t make it do your bidding, nobody has written a plugin to do what you want, and Google reveals no acceptable hacks, you just have to fire up Notepad and summon your inner PHP hacker.  Coaxing WordPress into displaying certain posts on a static page is just one of those times.

WordPress static pages are not supposed to show dynamic stuff. But, sometimes, you want them to anyway.  Here’s a plugin that does just that. This plugin adds the ability to put a tag in your page entry and have it display a list of posts using the get_posts template tag.

By default it will show the 10 most recent posts ordered in reverse date order, but it will accept any of the options provided by the get_posts template tag.  To use it, just put the following into the HTML of any page or post, use as many times as you like
on the same page:

[get_posts]

This default usage will return the last 10 posts in reverse chronological order. Along with all the options provided by the get_posts template tag, it will also accept one additional option:

ul_class: This is the class assigned to the bullet list. Default of “get_posts_class”.

An example with a few options:

[get_posts tag="my favorite tag" numberposts=5 orderby="title]

Shows 5 posts with the tag “my favorite tag” ordered by title.

There are quite a few more options … check the wordpress.org extensions page for more detailed documentation on all the options.

Download the plugin here, and please let us know with a comment if you have any suggestions, comments, requests or questions.  And, if you like it, hit the plugin page and give it a nice rating :-)

Sam is one of NuRelm’s founders. After a few years designing computer chips for organizations the size of small countries, he was tempted by the irresistible lures of starting a business: more work, less salary, and the ability to be as creative as he pleased provided the bills still got paid. This has worked out surprisingly well over the past 10 years, resulting in a successful company and a lot of happy clients. Sam’s electrical engineering background and years of Web application development experience, combined with the wonders of an MBA, allow him to perform feats such as installing wiring while expounding on the viability of selling Web-based software to simplify the process.
